Political Bing-trigue

Noticed a cool feature on Bing today. Search for “wantage constituency” for instance, or “gordon brown profile” and Bing gives me some quick answer support at the top of the page. Nice. (I live in that constituency and these example searches in no way describe my political affiliations. As if.)

TED, Blaise and Bing Maps

by Marc 19. February 2010 21:50

It’d be crazy for me not to spread the love for this awesome video from TED in which Blaise Aguera y Arcas (of Seadragon fame) demonstrates augmented reality integration inside Bing Maps.

I demo’d some of the Photosynth and Bing Maps integration at an internal shindig just a few months ago which I thought was awesome. Looks decidedly old already in the face of this. Fantastic pace of innovation from Bing – which I’m coming to expect.

Other videos I’d recommend (I’m still working my way through) would be Bill Gate’s Innovate to Zero, and Jamie Oliver’s TED Prize Wish: Teach every child about food.

With particular regard to Jamie’s session:

  • It pleases me that Evan (my daughter – 2) does recognise potatoes, tomatoes and lemons already.
  • Jamie has – in one 18 minute slot – validated my “drunken bloke on a ship in a force 9 gale” style of swaying about whilst giving a presentation. They try and change me, but I say no…

EyeOnEarth - Environmental Azure App

by Marc 20. November 2009 17:18

Just when you think you've escaped the Unified Communications net (THEY CAN ALWAYS FIND YOU!) for five minutes to have a look at Facebook, up pops another buddy - Stu McCarthy - to tell me he's just finished work on EyeOnEarth.eu. Seems like a bunch of MCS chums are involved so well done all.

The official press announcement is here, but in a nutshell you can scan around Europe courtesy of Bing Maps, Silverlight and Azure (hey - the coherent development strategy) and take a look at air and water quality monitors. Cool.
